Exercise – Benefits and Getting Started

Many of us have a love hate relationship with exercise. For some, it is essential and a part of what makes us feel satisfied and for others it is often something they wish they could get into but can’t find the motivation or the desire to do anything.   When I don’t exercise I feel lethargic, bloated, lazy, doubtful and sometimes even depressed. On the other hand when I make the effort to the exercise I feel youthful, positive, fulfilled, feel a sense of achievement and it sets me up for the day.   The reality is that is does not matter what exercise you do, it just matters that you do it.   Try different forms of exercise and see what you enjoy. There are so many options that you can do in a group environment or alone and may include but not exclusive to:    
  • A brisk walk for 30 minutes
  • Jogging
  • Swimming
  • Aqua Aerobics
  • Aqua Jogging
  • Cycling
  • Yoga
  • Gym Cardio Classes
  • Lifting weights
  • Thi Chi
  • Martial Arts
  You can be extreme or as gentle as you wish in your exercise but the most important thing is to just get exercising. Often the thoughts of exercising is worse than the reality and five minutes into it I wonder why I dreaded it so much.

Benefits of Exercise

According to the Mayo Clinic exercise has the following benefits:  
  • Controls weight
  • Combats health conditions and diseases
  • Improves mood
  • Boosts energy
  • Promotes better sleep
  • Can be fun
  The steps to getting started are easy.   See your doctor to get the all clear to start exercising if you have any medical conditions. Get the proper clothing so that you are comfortable. Schedule in when you are going to exercise and stick to it. Be intentional. Yes it’s going to hurt. Any exercise will be hard in the beginning as your muscles will need to adept but go slowly and ease into it. Don’t give up. Remember you are not going to the Olympics and you don’t have to prove yourself to anyone. This is just for you, your good health, satisfaction and state of mind.   Don’t over do it…remember you are not Rocky. Rest is just as important as the exercise itself. If you are walking…sure go every day,  but for other forms of exercise that are more strenuous on the body you need to allow rest for that muscle group. Think about exercising every other day or if you take up running for example you could go for a swim the following day.   Find a friend to exercise with or join a group. It’s so much more satisfying to exercise with others and is a great way to make friends.   Be well hydrated. Water is essential for powering your muscles. A really good rule of thumb is a liter of water for every 25kg of your weight and more on top of this to replenish what you lose during exercise. Don’t forget your Magnesium!   Most importantly…. ENJOY you’re new found energy.   The above are guidelines I share with my massage clients at Massage Central in Caloundra.
